"This picture shows the view from the Hessian borderline and a signpost towards the north saying 'Stop! This is the border. Federal Border Guard.' A West German photographer can also be seen in the picture. The East German borderline apparently lay significantly further to the north or was moved back which to led to some (possibly not accidental) confusion on the part of West Germans visiting the border prior to 1989 - and with dramatic consequence (arrests, injuries, shootings, etc. by members of the People's Police). The open area (field of fire) in front of the metal lattice fence was GDR territory already."
