On November 12, 1989, the border checkpoint Potsdamer Platz was officially opened by Walter Momper, then mayor of West Berlin, and by Erhard Krack, then mayor of East Berlin. Several hours later, Richard von Weizsäcker visited the new border checkpoint, gave autographs, and spoke to East German policemen.
