Memorial candles in the divided village of Mödlareuth (Wikipedia article, retrieved on June 11, 2009). Known as 'Little Berlin': The Inner German border ran right through the center of the small village of approx. 50 inhabitants and in 1966 GDR border troops erected a concrete wall there similar to the Berlin Wall. On 9 December a border crosing was opened for foot traffic.

"Border opening Mödlareuth, 5 am, snowfall. A farmer used this stable window to escape to the West. The GDR tore the farmyard down to the ground. The light of hope burns in a Christmas tree on the East side."
