"The ballot box for the Federal elections was in my old school, a technical college called Otto Grotewohl, in the district of Berlin-Pankow. As early as 1985, our German teacher (and Party secretary) would sigh at our class which, in her eyes, showed very one-sided political interests. 'None of you know the members of the Volkskammer, but you all know who is in the Bundestag.' And now the 'class enemy' had moved into the sacred halls that were still furnished in GDR style. To me it was a 'topsy-turvy' world. These elections were just as exciting as the local elections in May 1989, only this time the will of the electorate would manifest itself in front of the decimal point."
