From 24 October 1989 to 6 February 1990, large protests were held in Weimar every Tuesday.
Volkhardt Germer was mayor of Weimar from 23 November 1989 - 30 June 1990, and from 1994 - 2006. Before 1990, Germer was an SED representative on the Weimar city council, and from 1990 - 1994 he was a member of the first freely elected Assembly of City Councilors of Weimar. See also
