Csilla Freifrau von Boeselager, co-founder of the Malteser-Caritas aid organization, and an employee of the Malteser aid agency hang up a Malteser flag; Malteser initiated the large-scale operation in Hungary on 27 August 1989: "10,000 East German refugees are cared for in three camps before being allowed to travel to West Germany."
